FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about volunteering, events, donating, and partnering with D4D.
What is Dexterity for Difference (D4D)?
Dexterity for Difference is a youth-led community service organization based in Metro Detroit, Michigan. We bring people together to use their different skills, resources, and passions to make a lasting difference, starting with handmade bracelets, necklaces, and encouragement cards for children in local hospitals.
Is there an age requirement to volunteer?
No. D4D is not age-restricted and everyone is welcome: kids, teens, college students, parents, and adults. Volunteers under 18 are asked to list a parent or guardian contact on the sign-up form.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
Fill out the volunteer interest form on our Get Involved page. It asks for your name, email, phone, age, city, and what you are interested in. Our Director of Volunteer Operations will reach out with upcoming events.
Can I earn community service or volunteer hours?
Yes. Volunteers can earn community service hours at D4D events. Bring any form your school, NHS chapter, or program requires and a board member can sign off on the hours you complete.
Do I need to be good at crafts?
Not at all. The name says it: different skills, shared purpose. We teach everything at the event, and there are jobs for every skill set, from stringing beads and writing cards to photography, organizing, outreach, and fundraising.
What does "Dexterity" mean in your name?
Dexterity means skill with your hands. Our first projects are hands-on: handmade bracelets, necklaces, and cards. The bigger idea is that everyone has a skill, and every skill can make a difference.
When is the next event?
Our first event, Little Hands, Big Hearts: A Handmade Gift Initiative, is being scheduled now. The date and location in Metro Detroit will be announced on our Events page and social media. Sign up on the volunteer form to be notified first.
Who receives the bracelets, necklaces, and cards?
Children facing illness in local Metro Detroit hospitals. We are building partnerships with hospitals and children's charities so gifts reach kids who need a little extra hope.
Is D4D a school club?
No. D4D is an independent, community-wide organization open to anyone in Metro Detroit, not tied to a single school. Students from any school are welcome.
Are donations tax-deductible?
No. D4D is a student-led community organization and is not a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donations are not tax-deductible. Donations go directly to supplies and service projects, and our Treasurer keeps records of all funds.
How can my business sponsor or partner with D4D?
Businesses can donate supplies, sponsor an event, host a service day, or match fundraising. Visit our Partner With Us page or contact our board. Sponsors are recognized on our website and social media.
Can a hospital or charity partner with D4D?
Yes. Our Director of Community Outreach works with hospitals, children's charities, and Metro Detroit organizations to deliver handmade gifts and plan service projects. Reach out through our Partner With Us page.
Where is D4D located?
We serve all of Metro Detroit, including Detroit and suburbs in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties such as Troy, Dearborn, Sterling Heights, West Bloomfield, Novi, and Livonia. Event locations are announced for each event.
Who runs D4D?
D4D was co-founded by Mariah Zeer, Jayden Kalasho, and Brycen Houbba, who serve as Co-Presidents. The executive board also includes Candice Mansour (Vice President), Chloe Jamil (Director of Marketing), Ronnie Yaldoo (Treasurer), and Jacob Hanna (Director of Volunteer Operations).
